Voip is considered as an emerging set of applications that enables you to make phone calls over the internet. How it works is relatively simple. It converts voice in analogue over to digital. Digital data then can be sent over the internet.
This process takes place by sampling your voice which divides the analogue data into steps that can be assigned a numeric value. The beauty is once your voice is what they call digitized then it is able to be compressed.
The compressed digital data is then put into what is known as packets. These packets contain the data that is your voice. They are about 1500 bytes in size and as a result can be transferred over the internet.
For organizational purposes these packets contain information that relates to the origin of the information along with there destination and finally a time stamp. The time stamp enables the data to be re-assembled in the correct order once it reaches the final destination. Once there it is transferred back into analogue.
The advantages are many the biggest being the cost of operation. The disadvantages have become few over time. The initial issues were technically related due to it going from inception to development. The issues were problems such as voice jitter and so on. However today that is not an issue at all.
